What to Pack for a Stay at a Pet-Friendly Cottage Resort in Ontario

March 4, 2026

A pet-friendly cottage resort is the perfect getaway for the whole family, including your furry friends! No need to worry about a pet sitter—at Lake Edge Cottages, we welcome pets with open arms. Our peaceful lakeside cottages in the Kawarthas combine rustic charm with a commitment to eco-friendly practices, making both you and your pet feel right at home.

We are the perfect middle option between a full-service resort and a privately owned cottage rental. It feels like you've rented your own little cottage, but you don’t need to pack everything, including the kitchen sink, with you. Our cottages are well equipped with bed and kitchen linens. You don’t need to worry about bringing your own toilet paper, and we even supply bath robes for the units with hot tubs. You can find our full list of amenities here to give you an idea of what is supplied.

However, what do you pack for your four-legged friend at a pet-friendly cottage resort? We offer your pets lots of space to explore, a shoreline to splash in, and most of the cottages have dog-gated decks, but there are some things you will need to bring along with you to ensure the best possible stay for you and your pet.

Your Home Away from Home

Pets feel most comfortable with familiar scents and surroundings. They might feel uneasy sleeping somewhere away from home. Bring some of their creature comforts, like their crate or bed, and a favourite toy or blanket, so they have a comfortable, familiar place to sleep.

Creatures of Habit

Pets are creatures of habit and love routine. You’ll want to make sure you bring along their regular food, food bowl, and water bowl. Measure out the correct amount of food for your entire stay and bring a little extra, just in case. Running out of your pet’s usual food and switching brands or flavours can upset their stomach and cause unwanted messes.

We have lots of trails for your dog’s daily walk, so be sure to pack their leash, poop bags, and treat pouch. For cats, you’ll want to make sure their bathroom time is comfortable with their litter box, scoop and kitty litter.

Four-Pawed Adventures

Our pet-friendly cottage resort has lots of space for your furry friend to enjoy some adventures, from hiking trails to swimming in the lake. For lake swims, bring beach towels for yourself and one for your pup, too! This will come in handy for dirty, wet paws. The same goes for your feline friends, even if they don’t like swimming, they’ll appreciate a towel to dry off their paws.

It is highly recommended to bring a dog life jacket if you plan to go out in the boat with your dog—safety first!

You’ll feel at ease knowing our grounds are sprayed with a natural, eco- and pet-friendly product for mosquitoes, so there is nothing toxic to pets that is sprayed. Our wooded trails, turtle/frog pond, and forest areas aren’t sprayed, so bringing pet-safe mosquito repellent is recommended when exploring those areas.

Paws & Provisions

Even the most prepared pet parents forget a thing or two, and that’s okay! For treats, leashes, food, toys, and more,
Village Pet Food and Supply in nearby Lakefield has you covered. Need a vet? Village Animal Hospital is on-call after hours, and Peterborough offers the Kawartha Veterinary Emergency Clinic, a 24-hour emergency vet just 30 minutes away. For grooming beyond a lake dip, check out thePaw Spa or the DIY Dog Wash at Pet Styling by Becki in Peterborough.

We want your stay with us to be as relaxing and peaceful as possible, for both you and your furry friend. Cas and dogs love their time here so much that owners tell us their pets start to recognize the drive to the resort. As you head down the country road, tails are wagging! It’s such a joy to watch them leap out of the car, taking in the familiar scents and sights of past visits, returning to their home away from home in the Kawarthas.

By the middle of February, Ontarians have had enough of winter. At this point in the cold and snow, we’re done with bundling up and shovelling. A lot of us head to warmer climates, Anne and I included. Everywhere you go, people talk about how they are ready for spring. We sure are at Lake Edge Cottages! Spring in the Kawarthas is a beautiful time; it feels like everything is coming to life again. The sound of the chickadees greets you as you walk the trails. Butterflies flutter around and buds pop out on trees, followed by spring blossoms. Each warmer day is a reason to celebrate. Migratory birds return to their summer home, and turtles come out to nest.

Lake Edge Cottages is a pet-friendly resort on Katchawanooka Lake in the Kawarthas. The resort has a long history of being pet-friendly, beginning well before our family took over in 2019. It was part of what made this place special, and the reason so many guests return year after year. We loved the concept and felt it aligned with our values. If you have a furry friend yourself, you know that pets are a part of your family, and we want everyone in your family to enjoy your cottage getaway and feel included. It can be stressful trying to find a pet sitter or find accommodations that are actually pet friendly. Lake Edge Cottages is a relaxing and tranquil place for you to enjoy with your pet. There is no awkward moment of wondering if your pet is accepted; pets are a part of everyday life here. For the dog parents, finding a place to walk your pup is no problem on our 12.5-acre property. Hiking trails wind through the forest and around a marshland area, giving your dog plenty of space for a good old-fashioned sniff safari. And when the sun is shining, many dogs can’t resist heading for the water. You and your pup are welcome to swim anywhere along our 450-foot shoreline—just be mindful of our two-legged swimmers, especially the smaller ones. One thing our guests appreciate is that they don’t have to worry about poorly behaved dogs. We ask that you ensure all dogs staying with us are socialized and under control, whether on or off leash.

A Lakefield-area cottage resort in Peterborough is now covering most of its energy needs through solar panels. Federal funding has helped with it.
