What to Expect When You Visit Our Cottage Resort in Spring
By the middle of February, Ontarians have had enough of winter. At this point in the cold and snow, we’re done with bundling up and shovelling. A lot of us head to warmer climates, Anne and I included. Everywhere you go, people talk about how they are ready for spring. We sure are at Lake Edge Cottages!
Spring in the Kawarthas is a beautiful time; it feels like everything is coming to life again. The sound of the chickadees greets you as you walk the trails. Butterflies flutter around and buds pop out on trees, followed by spring blossoms. Each warmer day is a reason to celebrate. Migratory birds return to their summer home, and turtles come out to nest.
The Perfect Time for a Short Getaway
Spring is a great time to get away to cottage country and have a cottage resort getaway. If you are someone who prefers a shorter stay or a weekend getaway, then spring is a great option because we offer shorter stays in the shoulder seasons, both in spring and in fall.
There are plenty more benefits to a spring getaway to the Kawarthas, from milder temperatures to the peacefulness on the lake and on the highways to the activities you can enjoy and the nature you can take in.
If your perfect day is not too hot, not too cold, then spring is your season at a cottage resort in the Kawarthas. We offer two cottages with hot tubs, which are thoroughly enjoyed by our guests in the spring temps. There are also many great restaurant patios around that are perfect for a warm sunny spring day, such as
Lock 27 Tap and Grill in Young’s Point,
The Loon Restaurant in Lakefield, and
Mainstreet Landing in Buckhorn.
A Beautiful Season for Birding, Wildlife & Photography
Spring is also one of the best times of year for birding and wildlife viewing in the Kawarthas. As migration season begins, warblers, herons, and waterfowl return to the lakes and wetlands. Early mornings often bring a soft mist rising off the water, creating calm reflections that photographers love.
If you enjoy taking nature shots, this is a special time to visit. The light is gentle, the landscape is fresh with new growth, and wildlife is active. Whether it’s turtles nesting, a great blue heron lifting off from the shoreline, or a kayak gliding across still water, spring offers peaceful, photogenic moments everywhere you look.
Fewer Bugs, More Comfort
In our area we don’t need to worry about black flies, and we spray for mosquitoes on the grounds around the cottages (pet-friendly and eco-friendly spray). However, the hiking trails in the Kawarthas can get quite mosquitoey in the summer. Spring is a great time to enjoy a hike without worrying about pests.
A Dream Season for Anglers
The Kawarthas are known for fantastic fishing, with over 250 lakes and rivers. Spring is an exciting time for anglers as the temperatures get warmer and more fish seasons open. Trout fishing opens at the end of April, walleye in May, muskie and bass in June. You can enjoy shore fishing or rent out one of our boats to find your own secret fishing spot. If you want to know more about fishing in the Kawarthas we have a whole fishing page
here.
There is just something peaceful about fishing this time of year. There are not as many boats zipping around, you can relax and enjoy the meditative nature of the sport.
A Quieter Drive, A Slower Pace
There is something refreshing about travelling to cottage country in the spring. Highways are quieter, the rush north hasn’t fully begun, and the drive feels easy. However, the Kawarthas offer an easier drive even in the summer! While many summer cottagers head north on Highway 400, our guests cruise northeast, and for an even smoother route, Highway 407 connects directly to the 115.
Why arrive stressed from traffic when your getaway is meant to restore you?
A Season to Recharge
These are just a few reasons why the Kawarthas bloom in the spring and why we love this time of year at Lake Edge Cottages. It’s watching the peaceful kayaks on the lake, or taking the boat for a cruise through the locks once the Trent-Severn Waterway opens. Discovering shops in the neighbouring towns and taking some much earned “you time” after a hard winter. Summer gets hectic with scheduling and the effort to pack in as much fun in as possible. Spring is a time to recharge—and what better way than in nature with a perfect lake view.
